Amid spiraling protest by Madhya Pradesh farmers, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has begin fast for indefinite period of time and will continue “until peace is restored”. Reportedly, CM is considering removing interest on farm loans by which over six lakh farmers will get benefit at a cost of around 2,000 crore to the taxpayer. He said he recognize the problems of farmers as he has been a farmer himself.

The main reason behind starting farmers’ protest last week in Mandsaur is that the farmers of India demanded for better prices for their farm crops and debt relief. On Tuesday, the agitating farmers set vehicles on fire, blocked roads, vandalized property. To control this situation, the police started firing on farmers. This situation gave a drastic change when five farmers died on the spot. In April, CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath decided to remove farm loans and after that, other states and farmers’ organizations have been demanding a similar scheme.

Communist Party of India-Marxist State Secretary Badal Saroj also told the news agency, “This is nothing but hypocrisy.” The angry farmers who have lost their loved ones want action against police and added that, “Rs. 1 crore compensation promised by the government won’t bring back their loved ones”.

On Thursday, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi tried to travel Mandsaur to meet the families of those farmers who were killed in police open fire.
